How to Wash Your Alpaca Wool Blanket

How to Wash Your Alpaca Wool Blanket

Alpaca wool blankets are renowned for their exceptional softness, warmth, and natural hypoallergenic properties. But with such a luxurious material comes the question of proper care. Unlike your average throw, alpaca wool requires a gentle touch to maintain its exquisite texture and longevity. Fear not, discerning blanket owner! This guide will equip you with the knowledge to keep your alpaca wool blanket looking and feeling its best for years to come.

Understanding Alpaca Wool

What Makes Alpaca Wool Special?

Alpaca wool boasts unique qualities that set it apart from other wools. Here's what makes it so special:

  • Micron Fineness: Alpaca fibres are incredibly fine with Baby alpaca and Royal Alpaca being comparable to that of cashmere. These fibres, once prepared, have a luxurious feel to them and are sought after by luxury brands.
  • Natural Warmth: Despite its lightweight nature, alpaca wool is a fast and natural insulator, making it perfect for those cool yet cosy nights.
  • Moisture-Wicking: Alpaca fibres are naturally moisture-wicking, effectively drawing moisture away from the body, keeping you dry and comfortable.
  • Hypoallergenic: Unlike sheep's wool, alpaca wool contains minimal lanolin, a natural oil that can trigger allergies. This makes it a perfect choice for allergy sufferers as well as being better for the environment, as Lanolin requires large amounts of water and often chemicals to remove.
  • Durability: Alpaca wool is surprisingly strong and resilient, able to withstand years of use with proper care. Its fibres are double the size of cashmere which stops alpaca products from pilling.

Benefits of Alpaca Wool Blankets

Investing in an alpaca wool blanket brings a multitude of benefits:

  • Unparalleled Comfort: Enjoy unparalleled softness and warmth that rivals the finest cashmere.
  • Naturally Breathable: The moisture-wicking properties ensure a comfortable sleep experience.
  • Hypoallergenic Bliss: Breathe easy knowing the minimal lanolin content reduces allergy risks.
  • Long-Lasting Luxury: With proper care, your alpaca wool blanket will become a cherished heirloom.

Preparations Before Washing Your Alpaca Blanket

Checking Care Labels

Always begin by checking the care label sewn onto your alpaca wool blanket. This label will provide specific washing instructions tailored to the garment. It's important to note that due to the delicate nature of alpaca fibres, we generally don't recommend machine washing our alpaca wool blankets. The combination of water, detergent, and agitation can cause the fibres to interlock, leading to decreased softness, shrinkage, and a less smooth feel.

Gathering Necessary Supplies

  • Large basin or bathtub (for hand washing)
  • Mesh laundry bag (optional, for specific items)
  • Cool or lukewarm water
  • Gentle wool detergent (look for a detergent specifically formulated for woolens or delicates)
  • White vinegar (optional, for rinsing)
  • Large clean towels
  • Flat drying surface (drying rack or mesh laundry rack

Hand Washing Method (Recommended for Alpaca Wool Blankets)

For the most control and care, hand washing is the preferred method to wash an alpaca blanket. Here's how to do it:

Steps for Hand Washing Alpaca Wool Blankets

Preparing the Wash Basin:

  1. Fill your basin or bathtub with cool or lukewarm water. Aim for a temperature comfortable to the touch – not hot.

Washing Process:

  1. Add a small amount of gentle wool detergent to the water and gently mix it in to disperse the soap.
  2. If desired, add a tablespoon of white vinegar to the rinse water. This helps to neutralize any soap residue and maintain the softness of the wool.
  3. Turn your alpaca wool blanket inside out and gently submerge it in the soapy water.

  4. Avoid agitating, scrubbing, or wringing the blanket. Instead, gently swish it back and forth to loosen any dirt or debris.
  5. Let the blanket soak for no longer than 15 minutes. Excessive soaking can damage the fibres.

Rinsing and Drying:

  1. Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, cool water. Rinse the blanket thoroughly until all soap residue is removed. You may need to repeat the rinsing process several times.
  2. To remove excess water, gently squeeze the blanket between your palms. Do not wring or twist the blanket, as this can cause it to lose its shape.
  3. Lay the blanket flat on a clean, absorbent towel. Roll up the towel with the blanket inside to absorb as much moisture as possible.
  4. Unroll the towel and lay the blanket flat on a drying rack or mesh laundry rack. Choose a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight or heat sources.

Machine Washing Method (For Specific Alpaca Products Only)

Important Note: While hand-washing is generally recommended for alpaca products, we offer a few items that can be machine-washed with specific care. Always double-check the care label on your product before attempting machine washing.

Is Machine Washing Safe (For Specific Items Only)?

For Alpaca Blend Shawls and Throws only, machine washing can be done with caution. However, it's important to follow these guidelines strictly to avoid damaging the alpaca fibers:

  • Use a mesh laundry bag: This helps protect the shawl or throw from snags and tangles during the wash cycle.
  • Select the gentlest cycle possible: Look for a setting labeled "hand wash" or "delicates."
  • Set the water temperature to cold: Hot or even warm water can cause shrinkage.
  • Turn off spin cycle (optional but recommended): Spinning can be harsh on alpaca fibres. If your machine doesn't allow you to turn off the spin cycle, choose the lowest spin speed available.
  • Use a mild detergent: Use the same gentle wool detergent you would for hand washing and only use a small amount to clean your alpaca throw or shawl.

Drying Your Alpaca Wool Blanket

Avoiding Direct Heat:

Never put your alpaca wool blanket in the dryer, even on a low heat setting. The heat can cause shrinkage, felting, and loss of softness.

Proper Air Drying Techniques:

  1. Lay the blanket flat on a drying rack or mesh laundry rack in a well-ventilated area.
  2. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can fade the colors of the blanket.
  3. Flip the blanket occasionally to ensure even drying.
  4. Depending on the thickness of the blanket, it may take several days to dry completely. Be patient and avoid using artificial heat sources to speed up the process.

Additional Care Tips

Storage Tips:

  • Store your alpaca wool blanket in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Use a breathable storage container, such as a cedar chest or a cotton storage bag.
  • Avoid storing the blanket in plastic, as this can trap moisture and encourage mildew growth.

Dealing with Stains:

  • Address stains promptly to prevent them from setting.
  • Blot up any spills with a clean, absorbent cloth.
  • For stubborn stains, consult a professional dry cleaner who specializes in delicate fabrics. Never use harsh chemicals or stain removers on your alpaca wool blanket.

Long-term Maintenance:

  • Regularly air out your alpaca wool blanket to freshen it up and prevent odours.
  • You can gently brush the blanket with a soft-bristled brush to remove dust and debris. This should be done infrequently and with a light touch.
  • Professional cleaning may be necessary every few years, depending on how often you use the blanket. Opt for a dry cleaner who specializes in cleaning delicate fabrics.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using Hot Water:

Hot water is the enemy of alpaca wool. It can cause shrinkage and felting, ruining the luxurious texture of the blanket. Always use cool or lukewarm water for washing.

Wrinkling or Twisting the Blanket:

Avoid wringing or twisting the blanket as this can damage the delicate fibres. When removing excess water, gently squeeze the blanket between your palms or roll it up in a clean towel.

Using Harsh Chemicals:

Regular detergents, bleach, and other harsh chemicals can damage alpaca wool. Stick to gentle wool detergents specifically formulated for delicate fabrics.

FAQs

Can you wash alpaca wool in the washing machine?

For pure alpaca wool products and some delicate items like baby alpaca shawls and throws, dry cleaning is generally recommended. However, Alpaca Blend Shawls and Throws can be machine washed with extreme caution following the specific instructions outlined earlier. Always check the care label on your product before washing.

What detergent is best for alpaca wool?

Use a gentle wool detergent specifically formulated for woolens or delicates. Look for detergents that are free of harsh chemicals, enzymes, and lanolin.

How often should I wash my alpaca wool blanket?

Alpaca wool is naturally odour-resistant. You don't need to wash it frequently. Airing it out regularly and spot-cleaning small spills are often sufficient. A thorough wash might be needed every few months or once a year, depending on usage.

Can I iron my alpaca wool blanket?

Ironing is generally not necessary for alpaca wool blankets. However, if needed, use a cool iron setting and place a pressing cloth between the iron and the blanket to avoid scorching the fibres.

What should I do if my blanket shrinks?

Unfortunately, shrinkage from improper washing is often irreversible. However, you might try gently stretching the damp blanket back to its original size and shape while it air dries. This may not work for all cases, and professional help might be necessary.

Sep 29, 2024

We have two double bed beautiful alpaca blankets, unfortunately, we now live in a retirement apartment, the sink is a medium size sink nor do we have a bath. Is there any other way we can wash these blankets. We were spoilt when we had a big house with decent laundry room and a conservatory to lay out the blankets.

Your advice would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Racheal
